“Do you like personal styling for men more than for women?” I was recently asked by a client.
Not really, no, I said. Personal styling for men is just one part of my practice. I love that my clients trust me to help them find beautiful things. Also, I can’t get enough of happy people doing their own best thing in excellent outfits. It doesn’t matter if it’s a man or a woman.
But I thought about it all week. November is #menswear month at The First Look Image and truth be told I’ve been having a rocking time of it.
So … what is it about personal styling for men?
The latest trends in personal styling for men are a blast. Combining a pocket square with a tie and lapel pin, choosing when and how to wear a silk or woven tie, combining patterns, checks and knits and creating eye-catching color combinations requires expertise, a good eye and a certain amount of devil-may-care-ness that I’m very good at.
There are usually some general differences between men and women though. Men are almost always goal-oriented and look to me as the expert to lead. I’m kind of bossy and I love what I do so that works well for me. Menswear has fewer items to choose from which requires me to be more clever and creative in the combinations I create. Women focus on their goal of course but they also think about process. They notice how they feel inside the clothes. They also tend to listen to my expertise, consider my input and then make their own choices. And that is exciting to watch because it shows off what they really, really want.
But ultimately, it’s about men and women who know the confidence and joy that clothes can bring and helping them move ahead, see differently, change their minds and look better and better. In the end, it’s about transformation. I help you transform by creating a frame around you using color, shape, texture and line that’s more authentic and beautiful for you. For men, it happens when I combine a fisherman sweater with an antique-striped shirt in just the right color and scale to suit your male features. For women, it happens when I pair a long, silk, draped top and dark skinny pants with a pointed pump that’s right for your female shape. What happens in your life while you wear that outfit is the transformative side of personal styling!
Your transformation will be the focus for 2017 at The First Look Image. To be sure, as always the goal is to create an enjoyable and smart service around personal styling for men or women, but in 2017 look for blogs and posts about the transformative side of the process. What kind of change is happening to you? What’s the new story you’re telling about yourself? What are you moving toward? What are you moving away from? Personal styling for men and women helps you embody that change in your clothes while it tells your story.
