Create a collage that captures inspirational or aspirational images. doesn’t have to be a picture of a literal item you’d like to purchase. Choose images of colors, textures, patterns, or details that you love. arrange the images in a way that’s pleasing to you. Put your collage where you can see it. You’d be surprised how soon you’ll notice something or create an outfit that is a direct result of doing this exercise. Let the images speak to you; they could prepare you for your next smart fashion investment.
Vacation Inspiration for your Outfits
Need some spice in your summer wardrobe? India amazes with rich colors and textures in the spice bazaar. Create an inspired outfit for Fall from this vision by combining a black leather skirt with a saffron yellow knit sweater and taupe booties.
Imagine summer in your outfits. In Spain, revel in the old world elegance of swaying lines and worn textures of the architecture. Create a long-legged and flowing pantsuit outfit inspired by this old road going down the mountainside and pair it with long earrings of a soft coral color.
Bring home your summer travels to your wardrobe. In Penang, you can see this darling street art by Ernest Zacharevic. Finding such childish joy on a distressed wall would inspire an evening outfit made up of a floating, silk, gray dress with a worn-in black leather belt fit for daytime jeans. Painted in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia by Ernest Zacharevic in 2012 for the Georgetown Festival. Go to www.ernestzacharevic.com for more.
Summer stay home means new outfit inspiration. Lots of skill and talent goes into creating captivating store windows and in-store displays. Feast your eyes on how they’re showing current fashion. Don’t expect to love it all but use this opportunity to train your eye to see fashion in a new way. It often takes some time experiencing new things visually before we’re ready to try them physically.
Looking for super outfit ideas from summer? Go to a museum. The exhibits are inspiring or surprising and it’s a great place to people watch – after all arty places attract arty people and their arty outfits. Look, observe, and capture ideas in your pictures and journal that make you think. This neon installation by Maurizio Nannucci at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston inspires me to create an outfit that refers to what is culturally current, challenges the norm or is totally fringe.
Bright travels make beautiful outfit ideas. The beach, where the sea meets the sky, is where you can sit and name all the colors of blue you can see. Would you like to wear all those blues in a monochromatic outfit or just a pop of it in a handbag? Or watch the curving lines of the waves as they roll in to the beach and think about how you can replicate that feeling with pleating, ruching or draping.
Summer and sunshine go well with your outfit. And I picked it up from my cousin @beemichaella and @mmlafleur while we danced at the @nitti50 wedding! Now watch your own friends and listen to their suggestions. Friends are natural ambassadors for new resources, stores, products, sales or sample sales because they know us, like us and we trust them. Let them pave the way to see fashion in new places!
Look for inspiration in unexpected places. Check out my own collection of fashion books with special thanks to my friend @lizgamal for the Diana Vreeland Memos one – it’s a fave! Now you make a visit with a friend to a cool local bookstore, head to the fashion section and make plans for your Fall wardrobes. Look for books on specific designers, street fashion, fashion for specific age groups, or fashion in cities around the world.
